I think it was here where someone was asking about
tiny fluorescent lamps and their ballasts (or lack thereof).
For a while the dollar store near me sold these night lights:

Inside is a 2 inch fluorscent bulb
(most are white, some are other colors: pink, green, blue, orange).
For 110 VAC, the "ballast" contains
- 2 small green boxes (probably capacitors:
71F 7089 9212 ERO)
- 4: 56 ohm resistors
- 2: dot style diodes
