I have a digital video recorder that currently uses a 110 V AC power supply that outputs 12 volts DC @ 3 amps. I would like to power this device from a 12 V car battery. Can this be done ? If so, how, and how long can I expect it to operate under the battery power?

If you have a battery with a capacity of 10Ahr and you draw 3A then the time is about 3 hours.
If you are drawing 2A and have a 40Ahr battery, then the time is 20 hours.

Thank you very much. That is very helpful. I certainly appreciate it. Do I need to regulate the incoming power ?

.......... Do I need to regulate the incoming power ?

that really depends on how much variation the DVR can tolerate from the 12V
A fully charged battery could be as high as 13.5 - 14V
Is the currently used plugpack supply regulated ?
it should be marked regulated or unregulated
