120VAC to 12VDC - without a transformer?

Can the conversion from 120vac to 12vdc be done easily without a
transformer. I'm looking for a small package that can deliver about
700ma. Anyone know of a schematic out there I can reference?

Hi.

I think you can convert it to DC with a diode, a capacitor (used as
impedance for a signal of 120Hz), a 12V zener and another capacitor as a
filter.
