120Vac vs. 240Vac Grid-tie Inverters (or, Where Does the Energy Go?)

If a 120Vac grid-tie inverter feeds only a single leg of the electrical
distribution then will the power delivered by such an inverter feed only
half of the 240Vac loads while the (instantaneous) remainder is fed from the
utility (from the other side of the meter) through the other leg? In hot,
sunny climates where summer, daytime 240Vac air-conditioning loads represent
a significant portion of the total load does a 240Vac inverter directly
offset more grid energy than a 120Vac inverter?
