Dear Everyone,

I was wondering is it possible to activate a crystal 20KHz by just applying
a direct DC power supply in series with it?

In Series? I think not, maybe with some other device in parallel. You can
probably use a semiconductor multivibrator, any tunable sci, or cmos
depending on what you're trying to achieve.

what is your application ?

No. See http://www.epanorama.net/links/oscillator.html#crystal and
in particular the link from that page
http://www.ee.washington.edu/circuit_archive/circuits/F_ASCII_Schem.html#ASCIISCHEM_008 ,
because it shows an application close to yours (32 KHz instead of
20 KHz). Most crystal oscillators I have been around (in radios,
computers, etc) start at 1 to 2 MHz and go up from there.

You can get a pre-packaged oscillator which contains the crystal and
the oscillator circuit. You supply DC power to two pins, and a third
pin provides the output. However, these might be hard to find in
20 KHz; most of them start at 32 KHz and go up from there.

You might also ask in sci.electronics.basics .

You need to call, or activate over the web www.crystalActivate.com. They
will ask the freq and date of your purchased, be sure you are not trying to
activate a pirated crystal, duh! It usually takes about 2-4 hours to the
crystal to receive the signal, but I have been lucky and mine take less than
5 minutes. BTW there are many places to activate these but the web site I
have given seems to be the best.
