ADF7011 433MHz transmitter

There are these extremely simple to apply transmitter chips
such as the ADF7011, which are a 76kbit transmitters including
VCO & PLL. A few R & C and you're done. This gives me complete
transmitter on a thumbnail, just the actual microcontroller
delivering the data is to be added plus a quartz signal. 30mA
supply at 3V and it costs 4$.
Now comes the stupid part. How am I expected to receive the
signals ? Yes, I could build a PLL with a VCO, crystal, then
perhaps an AFC to lock to the frequency unless I'm hopping
the freqeuncy. Downmix to whatever and decode the bits.
It takes few hundred mA and perhaps a handsized pcb.
Or downconvert with a PLL multiplied Quartz from a DSP,
sample at few MSamples and have some code to extract the bits.

I'm somehow expecting a thumbnail sized receiver equally
trivial to build like the transmitter. No ?
Did I miss something ?

Linear tech, Maxim, and I think ADI, have some direct-conversion
quadrature receivers that'll get you down to baseband -- decoding the
data is your job, but it should be quite doable with a DsPIC, other
small DSP, or (gasp) analog circuitry.

nope, AD only seem to make TX's or RX/TX

but no RX's
so you might need a transceiver strapped into RX mode.

Dumb eh?

Dumb eh?

Apparently. They somehow figured the need for a receiver
to be (much) smaller than for transmitter or transceivers.
Or they figured it to be done differently, such a with an
ADC at a subharmonic.
