All that the others have said is fundamentally correct.
Do consider that "playing" with Americium can cause minute particles to
become airborne. If these are inhaled into the lungs there is the
potential for serious damage. It is not worth IMHO "playing" with it.
In grad school we were taught to be real cautious of any radioactive
sources but then we were around them quite a bit.
