There should still be an Active Electronics in Ottawa, look in the phone
book. Check the Yellow Pages, I'm not sure what the category would be,
to see what still exists. I'm in Montreal, not Ottawa, so I don't know
what the local situation is there. You might try posting in ott.general
to see if anyone who reads it can point you to local electronic stores.

Here in Montreal, most of the old-style stores that catered to hobbyists
(amongst others) have died off, though there are still a few in existence.
But there are plenty of distributors, and I assume the case would
be the same in Ottawa. How friendly they are to hobbyists will vary.

There are a some fleamarkets in Ottawa put on by some of the amateur
radio clubs. These can often be useful to the electronic hobbyist,
because they can be a source of some parts, old junk that can offer
up parts, test equipment, books and magazines. Check the list at
the Radio Amateurs of Canada website at http://www.rac.ca I think
there's one coming up at the end of August or early September.

For that matter, contacting some of those Ottawa clubs and asking
about local electronic outlets might also provide you with some names
of good local places for the hobbyist.
