I bought some AMP MTA Connectors and want to know if I have to buy the
Insertion Tool ($20) or if I can hand-crimp them in some way.

To terminate them properly you do indeed need the tool.

Is it true that some people use a mallet or a screwdriver?

There's a lot more metallurgy goes into crimped terminals than most people
realize. The manufacturer's recommended tool is the only way to be sure of
the right degree of compression.

The MTA I'm thinking of is discrete IDC btw. Those tools are *very* specific.

Yep, those are the people that screw them up and have to pay someone,
with what we like to call the right tool, to fix them.
Even the T-Handle tool can do a crappy job if you are not careful.
