Annual Power Consumption Summary

Hello Jim,

Oh man. Guess in your climate you have to. Ours runs 4hrs on an
under-sized impeller so it's probably about around 1hp. Plus 1hr for the
sweep booster pump.

I walk to work too.

Same here. It's about 100 feet.

My 5 year old truck has only 20,000 miles on it

That's more than I drive per year. Not counting rental cars.
Me too ;-)

Can someone talk to our Rottweiler about that? Mostly, after he let one
rip he quietly leaves the office.

Regards, Joerg

fridge.
some lights.
tv
microwave oven
2 x laptop computers
ADSL modem
radio, cd players.

Quite impressive. I estimate my fridge alone draws in the
neighborhood of 900kWhr.

My other loads are similar, plus I work at here too, so my figure is
home+work.
Everything's turned off when it's not needed.
Ditto.

I walk to work, so don't waste any energy there either.

Ditto, and to the store.

If I were to try cutting more, I'd get a new fridge, and/or possibly
try to cut back on all these wall-warted devices, which likely add up
to something significant even idled.

Farting is probably my major contribution to greenhouse gases.

Allan

My electrical service comes from a natural gas plant, so that all
goes to greenhouse gases. If they could burn your farts (and mine),
we'd all be better off :)

James Arthur

Mine's 'rated' at 380kWhr / year, but that's based on measurements of
'typical' usage, whatever that means.

You can improve things by not opening it if not needed, ensuring
there's unimpeded airflow around the bits that get hot, and putting
extra insulation (foam sheet) on any surfaces that feel cool to touch.

Allan

Sounds like you really do what I do... let loose a
bloody good fart, and blame our Rottweiler for it.

What kind of fridge do you have that uses so little energy?

Thanks in advance.

Just received my Annual Power Consumption Summary for 2005...

65,518KWH for $5,133.59

How does that cost compare to annual costs in a cold climate, like
Massachusetts?

Well, southern New Zealand, cool-ish, nothing like MA, but not like AZ
either. More like OR.

Last year was 6,599 KWh for $1,217. Electricity is used for
everything, except a gas stovetop, A 9Kg bottle costs $16 to refill,-
lasts about 6 months.

So $5528.87 total... same ballpark as mine, pretty much as I expected,
in my climate more goes for cooling, less for heating.

But you're around twice as much per KWH as I am.

Over 18c/kWh? Ouch, that's even more than here in California. Then again
it's New York State where everything is expensive.

But, to hear New Yorkers tell it, you enjoy it more ;-)

Hi Joerg,

Ugly, isn't it?!

As I understand it, our utility - Con Edison - is the highest
cost energy provider in the state. There are others serving
different regions in the state (eg PSEG) that charge a lot
less, if what I've been told is true.

It's not much better here. The munis are cheaper than the large
corporate utilities. That is because the corps have a monopoly plus
shareholder pressure whereas the muni boards have a monopoly but want to
get re-elected. I am all for free enterprise but when they have a state
sanctioned monopoly the end consumer always gets socked. There needs to
be competition. In the phone biz it's going back to the big few as well.
Over here ol' Ma Bell is now all we've really got. Even for Internet
unless you are a cable TV customer (we aren't), so I must pay $50/mo for
DSL. No alternatives, really.

Are those NZ dollars? Seems like a lot; 18 cents/kwh

Sure are. But it's more complex than that. We pay (depending on what
plan you are on, there's too many) around 12-16 c per KWh, PLUS get
hit with a daily line charge of about 35-80 cents per day,
irrespective of your power usage. It's almost an incentive to use
power, but the SOBs get you that way as well.
