This would have been a good link to start with:
http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/faq/#faq05
if you can figure out how to use it
Typical nerd-created pages: as user-hostile as possible. 8-|

Using the orbit estimator
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/MissionControl/overpass.html
gives data for Sacramento (in UDT, of course)
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Mi...ev=0&format=shortpr&tz_list=UTC&tz_off=+00.00
Luckily, the FAQ *did* include a link to a Time Zone Converter:
http://www.timezoneconverter.com/

....**THEN** you go to the daily flyover page that you linked to
and find the corresponding time frame.

Of course, _then_ you have to divine that the "4km" (etc.)
refers to the size of the pixels.

Just caught a few drops walking down Market Street.

We'll get it tonight. We tend to take those drops that you guys didn't
want ;-)

Oh. Yeah. But it usually smells funny around Sacramento.

Now, now ...

Whenever I turn off on 237 towards Moffett Field I have to roll up the
windows and hold my nose. Beats me how all those guys at the Ericsson
campus can stand that.

I won't do that until we have an emergency going on. Those folks should
not be bothered with non-emergencies. And they definitely know that
something is going on because the fire station is as deep in the thick
haze as we are.

No, no - for heaven's sakes, don't call 911 - use the regular number,
where you get the secretary or desk sergeant or whatever - the number
you'd call to ask for a burning permit or fisning license. (not that
they'd have any clue, but at least they probably work in the same
building. ;-) ).

Here in the LA area, things are kinda mellowing out - maybe it's just
a bunch of wet brush, that's so smoky because of the steam. I'm sure
that if there was any kind of emergency, they'd be making reverse 811
calls, announcing evacuations on the bullhorn, and so on.

Good Luck!

I know, but even that I won't do. I only call those non-emergency
numbers if I want to report a situation that can become dangerous at
some point in the more distant future. Like a crumbling road surface and
stuff.

Boggles my mind: Checked the local news web sites, nothing. They blabber
on about non-essential stuff like what art to put in the SMF airport.
Yet we sit here in thick smoke east of Sacramento, coughing our lungs
out. CDF site is not helpful either.

Anyone from northern California know where it is?

I look at <http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/activefiremaps.php> to see
whats burning.

I check on relatives in CA when we hear you're getting lots of fires out
there.

Well, I do not know. We are next to the Cameron Park airport and
yesterday the air became hazy and a slight smell developed. Now it's a
thick blue soup with a stinging forest fire stench. All around us and as
bad as this summer. No distinct smoke column anywhere and I can't hear
the usual roar of CDF planes so it probably is farther away. But it must
be quite big.

That's all I know, on account of a lack of information from the local
media. Maybe us rednecks aren't important. Or for some media, not
politically correct ;-)

Something like around Redding to Butte area from what little i can
find. Declared an emergency area but no news. That is really
disturbing.

Yeah, I've learned not to rely on official news much in such cases.
