I thought this was funny,

http://www.apple.com/getamac/

DL the adds and use VLC, quicktime makes you install itunes.

I went out to buy a mac this week, until i saw the price. I am still
considering it though.

Why is a Mac better ?

I am asking myself the same question since they became
Intel based... Perhaps we could also ask "what's the
difference"? (apart from MS & Apple marketing them as
different things).
Just wondering as a spectator to both PC and Apple
worlds (if they are still separated at all, that is,
trying to figure that out).

That's always been the major downside of macs. The prices border on
extortion.

OS-X is BSD unix. It is quite robust. Apples are less open to viruses
etc. More importantly, their ads are funny.

*Everything* is more secure than microsoft windows. Microsoft windows,
by default, is run with no security at all. Any process at any time can
overwrite the operating system. Vista is only slightly better. A
malicious program has to take a extra step or two to then go and clobber
the system.

Just buy a normal PC and install Linux, and be done with it.
Jobs (the person) talks about removing DRM completely.
In that case Vista is a joke, as it is the only new thing it has.
So it could well be Vista is dead already, and Apple is always twice the price.
Linux is free, but you will have to set apart a few years to learn Unix,
and then also a few years to write the apps you cannot find or buy.
LOL
Now that is honest aint it?

I got my wife a Mac, after her Windows system tied itself in knots.
It's fabulous. The packaging and industrial design are stunning. The
OS is simple to set up and use, makes sense, is consistant, and seems
bulletproof. It powers up and down in seconds.

The only part we had trouble with was Word, written by you-know-who
hacks. It got tangled up somehow, so we shut down in frustration. The
next morning, it worked fine. I'm convinced that the Mac has a little
Word repairman running in background.

Windows damages itself, and the Mac OS seems to repair itself.

Windows has always been a badly bungled imitation of the Mac OS. Vista
sounds like more of the same, a bad imitation of Apple but using 5x
the resources.

Oh I have already spent enough time to not need windows or Linux to
do my design and programming. I still have no pdf reader running
under DPS and no decent browser, but one of these days I'll port
some of those GPL things, I guess. For now I keep a wintel tv-set
for that purpose, perhaps I'll gather courage these days and
make it double-bootable (I think I know how to do it but I don't
know the chances things will go wrong and restoring may take me
a whole day so I postpone it... :).
Jobs (the person) talks about removing DRM completely.

I would not trust much of what he says. There recently was
a BBC article saying each ipod had the DRM (under another
name, fair-something IIRC) inside it, it is all about
who controls the access to the data, now whether there
is a control.
LOL
Now that is honest aint it?

It certainly is :)

What we need is an Apple that will run non-Microsoft-Windows apps...
such as PSpice ;-)

Another option is to run a virtual machine under linux or OSX. When your
windows setup gets funky just restart with the good image.

Here is yet another VM package (now open source GPL version.)
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox

To quote their site
"Support for Mac OS X and 64-bit operating systems is currently in the
works." (For the host OS)
The OSX version is in alpha test stage.

Current Hosts: Windows 32 bit, Linux, OSX (alpha), and OS2 (OS/2 is not
mentioned but they have a screen shot of the alpha version ;-)
Current Guests: FreeBSD, Linux (2.4&2.6), OpenBSD, OS/2, Windows NT,2000,
XP, 2003 server, Vista.
(See the docs for exceptions.)

But you see, that is what I do not want to do. I want to buy a
notebook that works from day 1. I am a programmer, so I spend enough
time with computers to not want to spend my spare time screwing around
with linux.

That is why I am still considering buying a Mac.

True enough, but if the damn thing works, and doesn't tie itself up in knots
on a regular basis, it is well worth it, IMHO.
You get your work done, and the dumb ass playbaby virus creating dickheads
leave it alone.
Why do we glamorize "hackers" with a nice, pc name? Why don't we and the
media call them as they are, "criminal, no good, immature bastards"?

Tom

You've got this ass-backwards. A true Hacker is one who isn't afraid to
"hack" (i.e., understand and modify circuitry, which sometimes involves
literally "hacking" into the PC board) - it used to be somewhat like a
badge of honor, much like "geek", except with hardware.

The scriptkiddies, pirates, and other low-lifes have hijacked the term
for themselves, or maybe it was the stupid-ass media that did it.

They should quit calling them "hackers" and call them "fuckheads".

Thanks,
Rich

The proper term is "Terrorist".
