I have an ex military diesel genset that has been resting for over 40 years. Cleaned the filters, replaced the radiator, dumped the old fuel and she fired up. Running a good steady 1800 RPM. It is a 12 wire model with brushes and has been wired in single phase fashion. All ID numbers and plates have corroded or been painted OD green. Efforts to find schematics have been useless. If I juice the exciter coil (going to brushes ) with 24 V, I generate 246V at 60HZ. But the Voltage regulator seems to be in very sad corroded shape.

I would like to replace the vr with a recent vintage model that will provide proper voltage to the exciter terminal and thus keep my genset and wife happy.

This unit used to have a "hickey" that served both as an alternator and a voltage regulator on the side of the engine, but the bearings are gone in it and cannot be relied on. Any ideas? a brushed 12 wire genset is a brushed 12 wire genset... any idea howw to update to solid state electronic control?

thanks
