i just purchased a pioneer vsx-822k av receiver for my house. I had a sony home theatre system with sony surround speakers, which i am currently using. The house is wired for sound and AV, but my problem involves the subwoofer. The subwoofer uses wire +/- connections but the av receiver uses an orange input plug. Can i use a wire connection with the input plug or do they both need to be the plug? what can i do? surround just isnt the same without the sub.

Just a guess but, I would say that the sub is unpowered and the receiver requires a powered sub.

Photos would help with a more definitive answer.

Umm. You don't connect an input from the receiver to a speaker. That would be an output. I think you better look at it again.

I attached some pictures, sorry for the 'input/output' confusion. I believe that my current sub is powered through the +/- connection that ran to the home theatre system and that I need a sub with its own power source to use the signal cable. You can see I am holding the signal cable next to the input plug. Thanks for the help

Yep......Just as I suspected. The receiver needs a powered sub and the sub you have is un-powered. A separate mono amp here would be applicable.

Or I could just choose to go with a different sub? I don't even know what type of sub to search for. Do I search for a powered sub? When I look at the photos I don't see them with the same output plug. Some I have seen have a left/right output, do I just use left or right?

Yea....just search for a powered sub. The left/right on the outside will be summed inside so you should be able to plug into either. And on the sub, it would be an input. Output would be from the receiver.
