Basic understanding of Stepper Motors

OK extremely basic questions on stepper motors:

I have a book that shows how to make a stepper out of a DC motor and an
H-Bridge (with some power transistors, or whatever). Then the book shows
different types of steppers (unipolar, bipolar, etc). Here's what I don't
understand: I own an _old_ Airpax stepper motor. Do I have to tie this
thing to an H-Bridge? Is there circuitry to drive the stepper inside the
stepper motor itself like a hobby servo has, or do I still have to build the
circuits shown in the book? If I still have to build the circuit, why do I
build a stepper motor instead of buying a regular DC motor? If it has
circuitry built in, can someone shoot me to a webpage that shows me how to
wire it up (its four leads) to test and see if it even works?

Sorry this is so basic but I just can't figure it out.
