it's used as a high side switch, google "transitor switch" .

It's a general purpose, medium to low voltage, low power, pnp transistor for
heaven's sake ! Aside from its respectable (but commonplace these days) noise
performance and good hFE, it is wholly unremarkable.

My $.02 :-

There's nothing forcing you to answer questions in this forum, so to
grudgingly answer questions in such a gruff, insulting and condescending
manner is completely uncalled for.

If someone in your past treated you so thoughtlessly I apologize, but break
the cycle.

Actions and attitudes like yours are what keeps many from entering
technology-related hobbies. Way to screw the future, pal!

(a) It's not a forum !

(b) Where the heck are you posting from anyway ? I'll wager it's not s.e.d

It most certainly is in a design 'forum' as you like to call it.

No. Idiots who can't read the data sheet and understand it simply have no
future. A modicum of simple mental competence is required to be a designer.

The question would conceivably have suited sci.electronics.basics however. FYI
the Fairchild data sheet says......

Switching and Amplifier (transistor)
• High Voltage: BC556, VCEO= -65V
• Low Noise: BC559, BC560
• Complement to BC546 ... BC 550

It's virtually (it is) a generic small signal device.
