Can air be used as a "semiconductor"?

Hi:

Why is silicon needed in the 1st place? For that matter, why any semi-
conductor? Why not just use the copper electric circuits? Semi-
conductors are half-way between conductor and insulator?

Couldn't air be used as a "semiconductor"? I assume that the voltages
used by chips' circuit could pass through air if the distance between
the copper conductor is close enough -- though this would decrease the
amperages, as the current has to flow to air [a powerful insulator]. I
guess [assuming a constant voltage and constanst air density] that a
greater distance between the coppers will result in a lower amperage
while a closer distance
will result. Then there is a point where the distance is too great for
electricity [at voltages used by chips' circuits] to flow through the
air gap. A higher voltage can generate current at greater distances
between coppers, than a lower voltage can. Right?

AFAIK, in digital integrated circuits:

1 = higher amperage

0 = lower amperage

So a 1 would consist of shorter gaps between coppers [to increase the
amperage], while a 0 would consist of longer gaps between coppers [to
decrease the amperage].

One problem is see involves, how to store the current. Maybe certain
types of electrets that do not permanently store electricity? Or maybe
storage isn't even necessary, if the spaces between coppers make up
the configuration of the electronic information.

Thanks,

Radium

It is.

an air based semiconductor called a "spark gap" is used in power
stage of a tesla coil.

Um, I was asking if this air-spacing could be used as a "semi-
conductor" in PCs.

Metals conduct by electron movement. Semiconductors conduct by
electron and hole movement. So you can play a lot more tricks with
semiconductors. For example, you can't make a diode with just metals.

Air pretty much doesn't conduct at all. The closest you can get to an
active device using air is maybe a triggered spark gap; it would be
tough to design a TV set using only triggered spark gaps.

Okay. What compromises the possibility of using microscopic spark gaps
in place of silicon in computer chip?

I fantasize about a microprocessor chip made up of extremely small
spark gaps in place of semiconductor solids. Any chance of this
fantasy becoming reality? If not, then why?

One potential advantage of this chip -- that I can think of -- would
be the ability to tolerate high-voltage static electricity and high
temperatures that would certainly damage the chips used in today's
PCs.
