CAN-BUS Info/Intro Help

Hello,
I'm looking for either a download(white paper) or suggestions for text books(some appear pricey) on the basics of the CAN-BUS system. This for a non-automotive application, a primer or basic text book is what I need. I'm working with a product that uses a Power I/O board, a CPU(small main board) and CAN modules, connected via a small ribbon cable as well as a 6-pin(pretty sure) discrete cable.
Any help would be appreciated.
