Is Oz actually a continent, or is it incontinent?

But more important - I'm surprised nobody has asked - is what the hell
does chip-and-pin mean?

John

Considering where it was posted from, I would think they are talking
about a smartcard credit card and a P.I.N. number system.

A supposedly secure method of paying with your debit/credit card. The card has a
chip and when you pay, you enter a PIN ( personal identification number ) to
verify the sale instead of signing. How you stop criminals reading the chip
contents ( any more than they had trouble reading and writing magnetic stripes )
eludes me.

yeah, and we in Oz are more than embarrassed and pissed off at his interminable
torrent of abuse at any and all who disagree with his jaundiced views of the
world.

He's been in my killfile for a long time, but occasional threads like this seem
to sneak under the radar. The only way to deal with Phyllis is to ignore her
ranting entirely and killfile.

Does anyone actually pay any attention to his ridiculous tirades ?

I rather enjoy his posts- sometimes there is substance to his criticism,
and I find his style a refreshing break from the sickening prim and
proper poof-brained posts usually comprised of no worthwhile content.

I think most people have a misunderstanding of the problem. The chip is
secure and has no security flaws.
From what I've been told the problem arose because of the transition
period to the new chip system. Although the cards have a chip now they
also still have the magnetic strip. The gang was actually copying the
magnetic strip and recording the pin as it was typed.

The issue raised is not with chip security. It is with the chip being
useless whilst the cards still contain the magnetic strip. It will be
going soon so this is just a temporary problem.

The UK is years ahead of the US with the rollout of this technology.
Its a massive task to get everyone switched over.

The chip could sign the transaction: amount, account number from,
account number to, sequence number for account-to. That information
would be useless to catch and re-use: it would deposit money into the
legitimate shop owners account, and re-use is prohibited by the sequence
number. The signature key never leaves the chip.

The UK has a lot smaller population and industrial base so it easier
to roll out new crap.

Of course you enjoy his posts. You're the only other person on earth
who understands him. You also like to wrestle with pigs. :(

It's not only Shell -

Chip & PIN Scam is Spreading:

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/saving-and-banking/article.html?in_article_id=408915&in_page_id=7&ct=5

Watch Out for Purse Snatchers:
http://www.hertsessexnews.co.uk/new...omen warned watch out for purse snatchers.lpf

I Was Targetted by Card Fraudsters:
http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/cont...gory=news&itemid=NOED29 Dec 2005 11:58:02:340

Reminder: It's your responsibility to keep your PIN safe at all times.
(Cards Terms & Conditions). Well the industry cant keep a PIN secure,
so I'll rip this up.

Crooks look as if they are targetting PINs, then dipping bags and
purses for highly valuable cards. Tough luck if your carrying more than
one card and use the same PIN for each card. Bingo a crook thinks. I
forgot to mention, advice on the cardwatch web site says; Dont use the
same PIN for each card.

In the interest of personal safety, PIN security or lack off, and
liability issues, I should imagine more and more people will be
considering Chip & Signature (especially with their credit cards),
that's if the industry decides to tell everyone about Chip & signature
cards
