Anyone know how to dismantle and clean an hp3970?

What have you been scanning that's steaming up the window?

Cigarette smoke.

Most well designed scanners have a method to address just this need.

You should be able to DL the manual from the HP site as well.

It should even appear intuitive. Well.... to some... ;-]

Usually, one of the ends has a cap that comes off, like the paper stop
end after removing part of the scanner apron or such.

Michael, Why don't you cross-post all your responses to jerks, such as
Shephard, to something like "alt.ima-fucking-jerk", so we can filter
it all out ?:)

Ok, if you'll post all your "Weather in Arizona" stuff somewhere
else. I can't afford to keep a dog, and you have to admit that ol' Jack
comes a' running everytime I call him. I shoud say, As long as h
doesn't step on his tounge and trips.

What can I say? My health is slowly improving after the surgery, and
so is my timing! When are you going to learn to throw a clear drop
cloth over your monitor and keyboard before reading ANY of my posts? ;-)

The manual says:

For instructions on cleaning the underside of the scanner glass, go to
www.hp.com/support, select your country or region, navigate to the
support page for your scanner, then click the link to view information
about cleaning the underside of the glass.

So they at least promise to supply the information, and a support
request might be honored.

Here's info from a different HP scanner:
----------
If the 6200C is like the 6100C, which is mechanically similar
to my 4C ...
0. Disconnect power. Take anti-static precautions.
1. Remove the auto-feed assembly.
This should expose the rear Torx screwheads.
2. Remove the metal covers over the 2 front Torx screw heads.
3. Remove the screws and lift off the upper case w/glass.
4. Clean and replace.

Search the net for further platen glass cleaning advice.

All I find on the absolutely worthless hp site is instructions to
disconnect power before wiping the outer surface of the glass ;-)

Not surprising. They might still have some decent support people at HP
though unless they have laid them off and sent all the work to
Bangalore. Maybe they're afraid you'll cut yourself on the glass and
sue them.

Spehro Pefhany

I will ;-)
