None of the newsgroups in the sci.electronics.* hierarchy are
intended for buying and selling. An obvious giveaway is that none
of them have "forsale" or "marketplace" in their name.

See Mark Zenier's guide to the hierarchy, at
ftp://ftp.eskimo.com/u/m/mzenier/seguide9706.txt

When sci.electronics was split back in '95, an associated newsgroup
was created for buying and selling:
misc.industry.electronics.marketplace

http://pages.ebay.com/help/welcome/usenet-policy.html
eBay users may not post on Usenet groups (Internet newsgroups) to
advertise eBay or an eBay listing that is inappropriate or violates
the Usenet board policy. If Usenet abuse is reported to eBay, we may
among other remedies remove the listing, issue a warning, or suspend
the user's eBay account.

Good thing that post does not advertise any eBay listings on your group
isn't it? I dont believe that the eBay TOS prohibits a link to a user's
feedback to act as an introduction to perhaps sceptical newsgroup readers.
Thanks for the update on the history of the groups. However, since in the
past I have completed more than a few sales on the sci.electronics.* groups,
it would appear that at least some of your readers appreciate the occasional
for sale post; further, I doubt that any of them appointed you the enforcer
of the newsgroup charter, which is at best a guide to postings rather than
canon law.

When I read your reply to my post, for a minute I was reminded of John
Fields, Professional Circuit Designer

Sorry John, I cant agree with you on this one - if I were advertising
pinball flyers on sci.electronics.design, or perhaps condom machines on
sci.electronics.equipment, you would have a more than valid point.
Since the Fluke 9010 is directly relevant to the interests of anyone reading
any of the newsgroups I chose, the posts are far from spam.

I read several of the newsgroups you posted to, and the Fluke 9010
isn't relevant to any of _my_ interests, so perhaps your target
audience isn't quite as broad as you think it is.

But, more to the point, the charters of the sci.electronics.*
newsgroups specifically state that they aren't intended to be used
as kiosks.

Of course, since there's no legal way to stop you from posting what
you want to you can violate the spirit of the groups and use them to
try to find happy homes for your widgets, but the fact remains that
the only time you show up is when you want to sell something.

You don't participate in any discussions, you don't present any
technical issues, and you don't ever show up unless you've got some
stuff you want to get rid of.

Not SPAM? I don't think so.

Well since I inadvertently used the phrase 'anyone reading' I have to give
you the point here. Nevertheless if you werent trying to prove a point, you
would have to agree that CPU emulators and testers are very relevant to the
intersts of MANY of those on these groups.

John - be honest here - no real disrespect (well, maybe a bit) intended - do
you not have better things to do with your time than seek out those who
allegedly violate an intangible and reprimand them? From your more than
ample self-trumpeting, your mind is a veritable cornucopia of useful and
profitable circuits; should you not be looking to cultivate that very
fertile field for the good of mankind, or at least to make a living?

and use them to
try to find happy homes for your widgets, but the fact remains that

That is because I dont have any need to pick the brains of those on the
groups (not that I am learned in their fields, simply that I dont practice
in them; absolutely no disrespect intended to the very many on those groups
with skills and education that no doubt would put mine to shame).
I show up to sell because there are people there who buy; even the most
erudite of circuit designers needs a pair of dikes now and then.

Well John thats whats great about America - we can all have and express our
opinions freely, as wrong as I think yours is.

Personally I would have said 'antisocial idiot', but thats just me.

It is not your *right* to post offtopic junk to irrelevant newsgroups, no
matter how you look at it. Ofcourse youre free to, considering they have no
way to enforce it, but a lot of people rely on something called
'etiquette'...

Its akin to someone saying 'I posted to every newsgroup because people
really do want to become dotcom millionaires for $5.99cents!'.

Perhaps to the denizens of the gaming groups, but to the other
groups to which you posted, I'd guess not. Moreover, I don't think
anyone designs with 6502's or 6800's or any of the target processors
your widgets support, any more, so your market seems to be limited
to those folks repairing video games and supporting older
microcontrollers.

Lurk around sci.electronics.* and alt.binaries.schematics.electronic
for a while and you might find that I do pro bono work which, I
hope, is helping mankind.

Making a living I'm not so concerned with, since my needs are
relatively simple and there's enough money coming in to take care of
them.

Well, of course you have to say that, and wave the flag a little to
make it all seem real, as seen from your side.

If you didn't, you'd have to admit that you're placing ads where ads
aren't welcome, and concede defeat. No?

do... Professional Circuit Designers don't make enough to pay for the good
stuff...

Circuit designers wouldn't use the Fluke 9010 anyway. Just poor techs
that have to repair that older stuff.

No, no, no... sigh....

It's just poor techs with a basement full of arcade machines...

Either that or people who are designing using the appropriate parts for
their clients needs/costs instead of using, say, a p4 to control a relay.
