Looking for help to find a replacement for the 4063b IC - I have a year 11
pupil who has built a circuit which requires this IC but so far the only
thing I can determine is that is either very hard to find or is plain
obsolete.

Any help would be appreciated as deadlines draw near.

Maybe a 74HC85 would do?

Digi-Key has the TI CD4063BE 4-bit magnitude comparator IC, in 16-pin DIP
format, for $0.64 each in onesies. They've also got it in 16-pin SOP
for the same price.

Mouser has the same part, and also has an ST Microelectronics version
for a few pence less.

"btopenworld" suggests that you are in UK.

As you say, they are no longer in the RS or
Farnell catalogues.

I have a couple in stock (unused, but condition
unknown), which you can have if you email your
snailmail address.

74 or 74LS are most of the time NOT compatible

You must take : 74HCTxxx

74Cxx will be nearest to 4000 series, followed by 74HC then 74HCT.

In all cases there may be problems if the supply voltage is not 5V.

I think some 74C are okay with higher supply voltages but not AFAIK 74HC.
