Greetings all

I am new to soldering and electronics repairs, and I am trying to find out if a rotary encoder
I am trying to replace is color coded according to impedance ( or some other metric).
I cannot find a repair manual on the device I am working on to confirm specs, so all
I have to go on is matching it to searched replacement parts based on form factor and color.

example , here is the part I found for sale..

POB10K-VKz.jpg
4-PIN 10kΩ SNAP-IN PC-MOUNT POTS

and here is the pcb with the part I want to replace..
(yes that nasty PCB has been isopropyl'ed by now..)

pot crop.jpg

I am willing to say it's a match, but I can't confirm it's a 10kΩ
but at around $20 for a new pair, just wanted to find out if more informed folks would concur
on the match..

thanks in advance for the input.

Mechanical rotary encoders are switch contacts, no resistance involved.
Perhaps you mean it is a pot with a push switch mechanism.
A link to the device would be helpful to confirm.

ok that's an interesting wrinkle ..but pretty sure these two parts do the same thing..
http://bustedgear.com/partz_POB10K-VK.html

it's just a left to right pot essentially.. it does not have a push function on my device..

hope the link provides some more clarity..

No spec sheet there that I can see.
Just assuming it is a pot with an extra pin for centre tap, maybe for some extra control within the amplifier.
When the # number is clicked on it says it is a linear 10K pot so if that is the same as the unit you have, then I'd say you are in business.

Definetley not a rotary encoder as you suggested in the heading though.

+1, The link shows them as: "These are the four rotary Controller pots used in the E-MU Vintage Keys. All the Controllers, including the Volume, use the same 10kΩ, linear-taper pot"
For comparison, (difference) look up 'Quadrature encoder'.

maybe "encoder" is used in a different connotation here.. as the pot is turned
it generates a midi message number ultimately, or midi "code" if you like

quadrature encoder looks somewhere pretty far above my pay grade.. but doesn't hurt to know they exist..

The confusion was party because there are quadrature encoders that look exactly like the pic's in post#1.

ohhh.. got it.. so they really could look identical.. that's helpful.. if not more confusing for the one trying to find a part haha

just to add a little more intrigue.. and who wouldn't be intrigued by all this..

https://www.midoriamerica.com/news/the-difference-pot-and-encoder/

the "backlash' is an interesting mention in this article, as that was the motivation
for getting the new part, as on testing it..it was not sending stable messages at
full turn... hmm.. tales of suspense for geeks.

I broke down and emailed manufacturer support tho.not holding my breath
on that. We'll see if they remember their "legacy" product.

I am ending up at digikey and mouser now, via full compass..

Full compass gave me two part numbers,

Rotary VR - R1610N-AA1-B10K-120°
Rotary VR - R1112N-HD1-B10K (L=17.5 F=12)

but I am not sure if they are functionally equivalent. The OEM replacements have been discontinued,
but digikey has a version of both parts. I'm following up on that, but I did score a nifty info sheet out of it
if anyone has the slightest interest.
