I'm looking for suggestions in components to be used in a high
efficiency power supply. It's a battery operated unit with GPRS
telephone unit where power consumption is a critical issue. The
problem is that most switching regulators have a good efficiency at
the maximum load, but this efficiency drops fast when the load is much
lower than the maximum load. Most of the time the device is running at
20mA, but when transmitting data by telephone the power supply must be
able to deliver bursts of 1.5A. Some of the studied switching
regulators use 5mA just for the regulator electronics itself, 25% of
our quiescent current! This is unacceptable.
Do you have suggestions for regulator components to look at?

Input voltage: 12V battery
Output voltage: 5V
Output current: 20mA (95% of time), 300mA (1.5A peak) for 5% of time.
