I want to learn the basics of building a device that receives output
from a computer (via anything from RS-232 to USB). I'm looking into
trying to use a computer to run virtually all functions of my car and
so I'll need to somehow integrate the systems. I'd appreciate being
pointed to any intro guides, FAQs, or tutorials that might be
applicable.

Thanks,

Matthew

PS - Any help on finding info about the electronics specific to the
car would be nice as well.

You mean you want to use your laptop while driving so that
you can roll down the windows, turn up the stereo, and lower
the temperature of the air conditioning??? If so, please outline
your driving routes so that I can be sure to avoid you as you
swerve all over the road :)

To learn about car electronics, start with this site.

and this site:

To learn about the current crop of On Board Diagnostic computers, start
here:

Why you'd want to do this is beyond me, it's already been done.
Most new cars already have a LAN built in, that you could access, but who'd
want to mess with a moving car.

Actually, that would be pretty neat. Automated, of course, so that if the
air temperature outside the car will bring the internal temperature closer
to the desired setting, the laptop will turn off the air conditioner, roll
down the windows, and turn up the stereo to counteract the wind noise, based
on current speed. ;-) Might actually swerve less than you, trying to do all
the same things manually.
