Concentrating an LEDs output.

Hello,

What is the best method for concentrating the flux of an LED into a
tighter beam? In this instance the LED is an infrared type.

I've noticed that with visible spectrum LEDs when you aim them
directly at a sensor the wire bond to the LED chip causes a dark spot
in the flux. Sometimes according to its make the reflector cup and
thus the spot is off centre but more often than not it's right in the
middle.

I was thinking of perhaps a lens system but are there other solutions
in use? Have any of you encounted this irritation?

I realise that I could simply offset the LED but it annoys me that
only a small part of the flux is then being used.

Cheers,

Andrew.
