Sorry guys for asking such newbie questions, but i am a mechanical guy which in other words means, that i am a novice in electronics, and besides google is not much of a help.

well i did learn in my twelfth grade physics that the electronic device used for converting direct current to alternating is called an "oscillator" and is built using transistors, but today on searching the net, i am coming across all sorts of devices such as choppers , inverters, transformers, etc and everything else apart from this oscillator.

also tell me how to design and build a circuit to convert the dc output of a 12v car battery to 12v ac , given the ratings of the battery in ampere-hours

You remember your physics class very well.
An oscillator is a "device" that will create an AC signal from a DC voltage.
The think is, it can deliver very little power to a load.
To make it into a power device a power stage is required.
It is like your audio system, a power amplifier is needed to drive the speakers.
Your CD or MP3 device etc. can't drive a speaker directly.

A device that creates an AC power source from a DC power source is called an "inverter" .
This isn't a project for a novice,it isn't simple and may be fatal if done the wrong way.
In fact, it may easily fail experient folks as well.

If you need one,the best thing for you would be to buy one.
For most applications you would require a "pure sine wave inverter",they are more expansive.

How much power do you need?
What devices are you going to operate with it?

Pulsed dc?
Square/triangle/sine wave out?

What you trying to power?

pure sine wave, and i just want to power house hold appliances with it. i require nearly 10 kw of ac power supply

Not easy, you'd need something similar to a class d amplifier to produce a sinewave before you get into current draw from parallel mosfets

can you elaborate more on this "power stage"

household appliances from 12 V AC?

i require nearly 10 kw
That's > 833 A on the 12 V side - not counting any losses!
Assuming this were manageable, which is a very, very ambitious project: A very big starter battery (e.g. from a truck) has a capacity of ~200 Ah which will be drained within 14 minutes.

What you're trying to achieve doesn't sound reasonable.

In very short:
A power stage is a "block" that can deliver power i.e both voltage and current simultaneously to provide the required power of the load.
It is constructed of power semiconductors devices and driven by an appropriate signal(non-power one).

About your 10KW project,
Not practical, and way beyond your abilities.

Do you live on a farm or other remote place?
Solar,wind are a possibility?
