Cordless Phone Battery Replacement

A while back my cordless phone battery died, but I didn't want to spend $10 for
a new battery. So I took three Energizer batteries, and using aluminum foil as
a conductor and duct tape, connected them in series and connected them into the
wires on the phone. It works perfectly well. I haven't checked under the lid to
see if it was leaking, but if it works, should it be ok then (even if it's
leaking)?

It will work until the batteries die. It's not a good idea to put the phone
in the charging cradle, however. The batteries could leak, the charger could
be damaged, and it's a possible fire hazard.

yea, that's exactly what I did. According to the product information, the
charger is only 50mA ... I have yet to see any battery explode at that current.
Also, the battery compartment is sealed pretty well. I'm sure the batteries
aren't leaking, but I really don't want to check.

I've seen batteries explode at currents well below
50mA: as soon as reversible chemical reactions have been
exhausted, the charge current causes electrolysis, leading to
pressure build-up and eventually explosion (or leakage if the seal is
weak). With low currents, it simply takes longer, but it does
definitely happen!
