1. If you hear a 'boom' at the power up state, it's probably a VDR (Voltage
Dependent Resistor) normalize the magnetic field in the CRT. (The cable that
goes around the tube).

2. The cracling noises are static discharges. Absolutely normal at power up.
If you then turn it off and back on, there will be less cracling noise.

Hope this opens up a new world for you :)

It's the degaussing coils causing a vibration at line frequency. The
thermistor in the degaussing circuit (not VDR) makes no noise.

Any explanation for why there is sometimes a crackling noise when you
first turn a television on?


Quite likely the dust build-up inside the TV set had come to a point
where the high voltage parts can arc across the fingers of dust. An
easy fix will be to use compressed air to blow the insides clean or
else vacuum it. Usual precautions - unplug, remove the cover and do
it outdoors. You don't want the dust inside the house anyway.
