That's like asking would I rather be hung or shot!

Kind of. I'm sure this is what it'll come to though.

Neither, of course. Freedom is better all around, otherwise, when
everyone is only following orders, who gives the orders? You?

There's no ban here. Why are you asking me ? I thought California and Australia were going to do it all on their own.

Except for the energy it takes to make the wafer, saw it into LED
chips, make the leadframe, bond the chip to it, make the epoxy, and
encapsulate the LED in it...

Cheers!

The question is: does the greater efficency of using LEDs for
lighting "make up" for that extra energy expenditure?

Being somewhat cynical, that's not an entirely fair comparison either: The
energy that goes into making the bulb might have been expended in, e.g., China
where energy is "cheaper" due to much laxer environmental regulations. Less
cynically, the energy still might have come from a cleaner source (most likely
nuclear) than what your neighborhood power plant provides (often coal... nasty
stuff).

Technologies don't always have to strictly save energy to have a beneficial
impact on the environment.

(I think that if Al Gore were really honest, he'd admit that he's really not
trying to get anyone to use *less* energy than whatever it takes to make them
"comfortable" -- set the A/C to 68 if you like, keep driving those muscle cars
and SUVs -- he's just trying to get them to use *cleaner* energy...)

Yea, the radioactivity from smokestack(s) of a coal-fired plant is
more than that from a nuclear plant.
Strange way to get "hot"...

With old-fashioned electro-mechanical 'starters' no doubt.

Electronic CFLs simply don't have such a problem.

Mine survive just fine being switched on and off. They may *exceed* their stated
life when rarely cycled perhaps.

Have you used any good quality CFLs like Philips or Osram ?

Graham

I've bought Phillips CFLs. No difference in quality.

I recently examined my pile of dead CFLs. All failed due to open
heater filaments, and not all had much runtime, so it seems repeated
thermal shocks are a primary cause of failures.

That said, one of these lamps served in my main bathroom for many
years--five or six?--cycling many times a day, and another survived
similar high-cycling duty for a similar span.

I lay that on the lawmakers' boneheaded "de"-regulation: outlawing
long-term supply agreements, forcing generators to buy daily at the
spot-market, and, further, requiring them to buy energy at market
price, but sell at a fixed price. The one makes the system unstable,
the other insulates consumers from the real cost of energy, and so
stems pressure / awareness / desire to conserve. That's "de"-
regulation? Sheesh.

Kenny took advantage of it, but the legislators made it possible.

Best,
James Arthur

My Philips Marathon CFL 25W died within 2 years.
It had zero ventilation in a glass globe fixture. Cruel??..
Average ambient temperature 22C. Peaking to 30C in summer time.
I (on-off)'d it about x2/day.
One thing that bugged me was that it didnt reach max brightness until
a few minutes after turn on.

Besides...look on the bright side (pun) ...it's still much better than
using fire or moonlight. :)

They do benefit from ventilation.

That's quite rare now. Over here we have the Philips Genie range. I've never come
across a 'Marathon'.
