I struck gold on my previous question, so I'll go again. The transformer in question is unmarked, It is about about 3.5x3.5x4 inches and encased in metal. How can I safely determine a working load for it? I've read that these transformers have working temperature limits of around 35C above ambient, so I'm thinking that I can load it up until it becomes hot to the touch. Seems a sloppy way to go about it, though. Are there more exact methods within my reach?

Too hot to touch is too hot.

As has been observed previously, the power handling capability of a transformer is pretty closely related to its weight. If you have another transformer of similar construction where you know the specs (VA rating would be perfect) then you can compare the weights and scale the VA accordingly.

It may not be exact, but it is an informed guess.
