Hello, I am trying to figure out what type of dial is used in the Kenwood KDC-MP522 car stereo. I plan to hot wire a new dial to it installing it on my dash so I can mount the stereo in the back of my car and put a android tablet in its place while still being able to control the volume. The volume dial has three pins and turns endlessly (can turn in either direction forever) with multiple clicks in between representing one volume up or down. I have tried googling the various dial types and think I might have a rotary encoder. I have found a service manual here (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1064870/Kenwood-Kdc-M6024.html#product-KDC-MP522) that has board views of the stereo. Any help in figuring out what type of dial the volume knob is would be much appreciated!

Hi
welcome to EP :)

I think the correct term for this type of volume knob is scroll wheel

have you googled for a service manual ?

have you contacted Kenwood for a service manual ?

Manual is block diagram meaning specific wiring is not shown.

Page 2 says volume S24 rotary encoder. So pretty much spot on with your assumption.

However just what wiring configuration is questionable.

Arduino make a simple rotary encoder but you need to give it some supply voltage to work and this would be where the actual wiring schematics come in as (I think) Davenn suggested.
Available on Ebay for about $1.00.

Is it possible to have two rotary encoders wired together? By that I mean leave the existing encoder in place and wire the new one directly to its chA chB gnd pins. Since I do not have a wiring diagram I think this would be the easiest approach. Also can anyone let me know what this shaft style is called: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ori...sc&btsid=df6f628b-dec3-4de0-8f4a-a47ee60baf62

I am having trouble finding matching knobs for these style shafts.
