I need some 555 timers for beginner projects like those seen in the Make and other books. Can someone please give me a specific part no for 555 timer in the Mousers catalog that's good for all around basic experimenting? There's lots of different part nos for these timers and I don't know one from the other.

OK, here's how you do it.

1) Go to Mouser's home page
2) Enter 555 in the search field
3) Go to semiconductors and select "clock and timer ICs (analog)"
4) You get a page allowing you to narrow down the 150 options. Select the package DIL-8 (there is only 1 match
5) That's what you want.

Since I know this chip more formally as an NE555, that's what I would have searched for. It takes you directly from step 1 to step 3.

Yeah, you have to know more than just "555" to find it easily, so I don't blame you for asking.

LM555 is another common name for this timer.
Make sure you get a DIP (dual in line) package, if you're wanting this for breadboarding.
Since you're planning to order some, check some of the circuits you want to build, and
make sure you've got the resistors and capacitors you'll need too.

Or go to Radio Shack "The Shack" and buy a TLC555, which is made by Texas Insturments. The TLC555 is a replacement for the NE555.

Sure.

It's going to be the last resort (pretty much). Either that or nostalgia.
