Just wondering why commercial video DVDs have a higher capacity that
the blank discs I normally buy eg DVD-R etc. Am I correct in that the
former is single sided? And if so can I get higher capacity single
sided writeables?

Yes, double layer. They've gotten quite a bit cheaper.

To clarify, commercial DVD videos are double layer?

If you want high quality and long record times, you need double layer.

The last double layer discs I bought (Verbatim) are rated for 8.5G/240
minutes, and a 2.4X record speed. You need DVD DL hardware for these.

I can put only an hour of video on the single layer discs I buy.
