If you hook up an electrolytic capacitor to 120VAC it too will go BANG
and lots of paper and tin foil will fly about.

Please do this using a long long extension cord away from people.
Make shure there is bullet proof glass between any people and the
capacitor. Have a fire exitnguisher handy. Do it away from anything
that could catch fire. Ensure that the 120VAC is properly fused.

This is called a squib.

In boy scouts (giving away secrets here),
we would press match heads into a ballpoint pen spring or steel wool.
Place it near the tinder and apply 12V from a car battery to each end.
Not fast, but it works.
Put the fuse of a firecracker in there and bang!

Thin steel wire glows a nice shade of RED HOT when attached to a car
battery . 44 gauge seems to work well .
