Emerson VCR755 - bad recording

This is the same machine that had been running fine after replacing the
belts & mode switch. Now it started recording poorly - what I get is a
duplicate offset image. Kind of looks like vertical foldover, except it's
actually offset, not upside down.

1. I have tried all 3 speeds - no difference.
2. Playing a tape recorded on another machine seems to be fine.
3. If I go into the fast scan mode, it looks normal, it's just in play mode
that I see the problem.
4. Adjusting the tracking will affect the image, but not fix it.
5. I have given it a good cleaning, but it didn't appear to change
anything.

Any thoughts?

Thanks - I'll give it another go. What's the chance I had a head fail?

Try pause. If you have a good picture in pause then its something to do
with the captain servo locking or tracking pulse.

Try putting in pause. If you have a good pix then it is a capstan servo
lock or control tracking pulse problem.

capstand servo lock or control track problems

I checked the pause mode last night and I do not get the double image. I
get a snowy patch, but the image is only a single image.

I don't have a good image of the pix your describing.
Since it plays back recordings from other units or prerecords I would
think the heads are ok.
Things to check
Make sure the tape guides are going into the V stops.
back tension on tape.
Maybe a record switch voltage is low only effecting record.
Other thoughts are the pg and fg pulses from the cylinder motor. But I'm
still thinking about why the difference.
Maybe its something to do with the head switching pulse as during
record the the vcr creates the switch pulse and during playback it
reads it off the tape.
What things have you checked ?
Do you have a schematic?
Can you e-mail me a picture?
