ESD mat seems potentially dangerous?

Haha, funny. Here's the one I got, love this thing:

Though as usual, right around a month after I got it they came out with this really neat one that I wish I would have gotten instead:

Maybe you should think about modding the button so you can clip the wrist strap in there. Then you don't have to stretch your wrist strap cord so far either.

Wow that is really huge! Well, something for me to think about for the future.

(Over $70 whopping USD on Amazon; no freebie shipping).

I will probably have the conduction wire (from the printer) very long, so I probably can clip the wrist strap on there also with no problems. I am going to find a clean-ish penny and see about soldering it in the coming days.

What is a dime made of? It seems a bit more AESTHETIC than a penny but I guess costs me 10x more in component costs hahaha.

(Hmmm: DIME --> "outer layers of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel, bonded to a pure copper core.")

Well geez, why not just go with a gold dollar if you're going for the bling bling! Haha!

I got my mat on a really good sale: $20.

Soldering two pennies together the, ah, professional way. Haha.

I guess he put more solder on top to maintain the heat transfer?

ANOTHER QUESTION

My ESD mat is sliding around all over the wooden desk.

Should I put one of those friction mat things underneath? The ones that are rubbery and I think sometimes used under carpets, etc? With ESD grounding, there's nothing to worry about in terms of buildup right?

That's cute, but it's silly to make a big deal out of it being a .2mm tip. When submerged in solder the tip is effectively as large as the surface area in contact with the solder. I'm going to try this with my Ersa iron and see how it does.

Yup, go ahead and put it under there.

I love it that I can DIY this thing, even though it's just a cheap wire doodad.

Well, let's see how it goes.

So, I said I will do this in a few days but how can a guy resist mucking around?

It was probably one of the less refined soldering jobs in the world, but nothing that I couldn't hide with a bit of magical shrink tubing! (I just so happened to have some and didn't have a chance to use it, until now!)

Everything seems to check out; I double checked using the DMM.

Thanks to all you guys for advice on this.

:-D

I just tried my Ersa soldering iron on the penny test shown in that video; about 35 seconds from first touch on the 'low' PID loop setting and a little over 20 seconds on the 'high' PID setting with the temp set at 350°C. Your soldering looks fine to me...

=) oh, brother! Good deal on eBay but there aren't really many places that sell them or parts for them in the U.S.

Well, just to report that the ESD mat grounding seems to work perfectly.

We were doing laundry today and I picked up a bunch of super static clothes, and went over to touch the mat, and as soon as I did, the static all discharged.
