I have several battery backups (UPS for computers) that don't hold a
charge at all anymore.

Any pointers as to what is failing and why?
What should I check and how?
Can I fix them?

thanks,

How old are the UPSs (or batteries in the UPS)?

Typically, expect 3 yrs. of life for a battery.

If your UPS supports it, replace the battery. If not, buy a new UPS.

Thanks for the reply Julie,

I think you are right.
All these are old perhaps older than 3 yrs which seems like a
very short lifespan to me.

Since posting I found this page:

If you are relying on a UPS for critical work, test monthly, replace battery
every 3 years.

If you are a casual home user that has a UPS as a nice-to-have, replace every 5
years or when it fails. Note that at the time of failure, you may lose data
and/or cause other damage.
