Fiber-optic Evanescent Wave Fluorescence!

Hi,

I'm trying to set up an inexpensive fiber-optic evanescent wave
fluorescence system, does anything know much about that? In particular,
the lasers are quite large/expensive, be it 488nm Argon-ion or some sort
of HeNe. Why do people not use cheaper laser diodes, such as the ones
offered by Sanyo or Sony? For example, I was looking to launch one of
these lasers:
http://www.photonic-products.com/products/laser_diode_modules/standard_output.htm

into a multimode fiber and go from there...why would this NOT work?
Sorry, this probably a quite basic question but I am new to the field.

Thanks,
Girish

You should post this on alt.lasers, you'll likely get more educated
responses.

I'm not sure about this application, but diodes generally have poor
divergence and beam shapes, as well as high powered ones outside of the IR
wavelength are difficult/expensive to obtain.
