Fire Alarm Wire for Dialer?

Has anyone had someone recommend using fire alarm wire to connect the
telco interface to the RJ31X? Seems like a reasonable suggestion
since that line has to survive at least as long as the line between
the panel and the smokes, but I am not aware of this being a code
requirement. Comments welcome.

It depends on the system. For commerical or institutional it is quite often
speced to be in conduit if the fire panel is not in the phone room. I run
plenum wire myself for it.

That's a good idea, Bob. While plenum cable's primary benefit is that it
doesn't generate toxic smoke when burned, it is also resistant to higher
temperatures and may last longer than conventional cable jackets during the
onset of a fire.

I would hope that during the "onset of the fire" the alarm system's
communicating the problem to the CS and the trucks are rolling... By the time
it get's hot enough to burn either plenum rated cable or standard FT-4, the
chances of any signal getting through is slim to nil. It's why you run it in
conduit, or use mineral cable.

Twisted pair telephone cable would be less prone to pick up interference.
For short runs fire alarm wire would not make a difference but if you were
installing long runs in noisy industrial environments or you were installing
in a area know to have problems with RF coupling into phone lines adhering
to clean wiring practices would be prudent.
