Otoh they don't cost as much as they used to.

Theoretically it should lie in our hands as customers to decide whether to buy good quality (at a premium) or low quality (at low prices). The problem is that even brands with a good reputation seemingly tend to resort to low quality manufacturing but charge high prices - mostly for the brand name. So we customers are left without a true choice.

The joys of progress.
The old stuff used to be steel and bolted together, now it seems to be mostly plastic and riveted or clipped together. We are rapidly becoming a throw away society.
As Harald said, much stuff is cheaper than it used to be.
Maybe I am just getting old?
