What are your suggestions regarding free downloads which are available?
For private/hobbyist use I can't justify the expense of commercial versions.

Also what, if any, is the differencce between spice and pspice?

I just downloaded LTSpice (SwitcherCad III) last week and was doing some
samples with it. It seems to have everything I need for the time being.

One of the good benefits of LTSpice (and possibly other versions as well) is
the capability of exporting diagrams to text files. Say you were having
problems with a circuit -- simply export your diagram and post to the
message board, where someone can re-construct your diagram exactly.

It seems to be fairly intuitive, offering a lot of drop-in components that
you can pre-select. Or, if you don't find your component, you can enter the
custom parameters (e.g. for resistor, W, R, Tolerance, etc.)

Hope that helps.

See my notes and links to some 60 ECAD programs at

several of which have Spice facilities in various flavours.

I like SIMetrix, the Intro version is enough for hobbyist circuits.
http://www.catena.uk.com .

May not be very user friendly at start, IMHO it has still a little
"nerdish" aspects, but when you learn it you like it!

Also there's LTSpice which is very good. http://www.linear.com
