Scenario:

Oritron DVD player with component output for Py, Pb, Pr or YUV.
Haven't used it in the Py, Pb, Pr mode till last night. The disc I played
was brand new, never played 16:9 format. I noticed immediately that
playback was not right. Frequently interrupted with pixelations as if the
DVD was dirty or scratched. Audio was also interrupted during the video
errors. Just for the hell of it I switch the player to YUV mode (has soft
control on remote for this) and VOILA! no more problems. Any conjecture as
to what's going on here? The player is lightly used, maybe two hours a
week. It was purchased in July of 06 but sat in a box until this spring.

You could try cleaning, treating and reseating the various connectors, but
the laser pickup is still the most likely suspect. A shame there is so much
cheap junk out there these days, though even major manufacturers have alway
had problems with DVD laser pickups.
