Generating 9V

Hello

I want to be able to generate 9V from a 3.3V source (and possibly a 5V
source in the future). I was thinking about using a MAX3232, which if I
remember correctly will give me 10V (close enough to 9V). All voltages are
DC. Does anyone know an easy way to turn 3.3V into 9V? Do any chips exist
to do it? I was hoping for a simple answer.

Hello C,

I am not familiar with the max 3232, but you may want to look at the data
sheets for the TL499A (from TI). It is an 8 pin dip, and you need to add one
inductor, a few caps and resistors, but it is programmable to output from
2.9 to 30Vdc. I think it is limited to 100mA, but you did not specify how
much current you needed so this is the first one that comes to mind. I am
sure there are others.

Thanks for the info.

I searched in Farnell for the part and the closest I could find was the
TL497. It looks like it can do what I want (I think my current requirements
are quite low). The trouble is I'm not sure how to select the correct
values for the resistors, capacitors and inductor (my electronics knowledge
is quite low). I've looked at the equations in the datasheet, but they are
a bit beyond me (if I'm honest). Could you recommend the correct
components?

It just so happens that I found a schematic for a 3 to 9Volt converter a
couple of weeks ago (using the TL499) on the
alt.binaries.schematics.electronics news group. If you can get that group, I
can post it there. Let me know. We are not supposed to post binaries here.

I will post it to abse today under the subject '3 to 9 Volt converter'. I
have not built it myself yet, and it is possible that there may be some
errors in it, but if so, maybe someone will reply with what's wrong with it
(if anything).
