Putz.
This is a World-wide medium.
Stuff that is in Redondo Beach, CA needs to have *SoCal* or some such
in the subject line.

"Left Coast" would suffice ;-)

Also, an announcement for something that happened two days ago
should have "Just Missed It" in the subject.

It's every month! And I've met people from as far north as Seattle, and as far
east as Virginia at this particular market.

Yes, even someone from UK! Although most of the year he lives in Orange
County!

Like the annual gathering at Fort Tuthill, this has become an institution.

Only slightly closer.
Judging by his call sign,
you'd think he was in the East of the USA
(I'm guessing he started there).
http://www.google.com/search?&q=west-of-the-mississippi+callsign+the-letter-w+nor

I think that just refers to broadcast stations.

In the Amateur Radio world, W6/K6 is California.

The W6TRW call got me a little closer than that!
The 'W' and 'K' (and 'X', I think) aren't reliable indications.
For instance KDKA is a torch in Pittsburgh PA.
Keith Williams

They *are* reliable indicators for commercial broadcasters.
KDKA is the ONLY exception (grandfathered).
X is Mexico. C is Canada.
I ass-u-me'd the same system held for hams.

The prefixes are assigned by country; big countries get more than one
letter (the US has W, K, N and AA through A something, Canada has at
least C and VE but may have more, Mexico has at least X). Small
countries may get a two-character prefix, usually starting with a letter
(like I4 or something -- don't ask me, I'm not _that_ much of a prefix
expert). Medium sized countries get a single letter.

Within a country the call signs are assigned however the hell that
country feels like. The FCC assigns Wxx, Wxxx, Kxx and Kxxx to
commercial broadcasters, you'll see 'N' in the front of a lot of
aircraft callsigns. Amateur radio calls are assigned with a number
somewhere in the middle, with the number (0-9) designating the region
and with some 'specials' (KA7 designates Alaska, for instance), and the
format of the callsign generally indicating license class (xx7xxx
indicates a technician-class from the Northwest, x7xxx indicates
General, x7xx, xx7x, AA7x or AA7xx indicates Extra).

There, that's all I know.

KG7LI (from Oregon), formerly N1FUW (when I lived for a while in
Massachusetts).

Maybe not anymore. I used to think W7 - K7 etc., was Or, Wa, etc., but after I
let my license expire (W7SAT) it was grabbed by a satellite society in
California. For all I know, I can get my KL7BCQ license back and I'm in
Washington.

If you had it before, you MAY be able to get it back, but you may
have to pay for a Vanity call.

But in general, unless you moved into California, if you apply in
California the call will be a Wx6xxx or a Kx6xxx.

No, it's not the only exception (though perhaps they're all
granfathered). Glancing through the FCC license database of AM
stations, I come up with these exceptions:

American Samoa (which side of the Mississippi is AS on?)
- KJAL
- WVUV (apparently they can't decide either)

Missouri
- WMBH

IOWA
- WMI
- WOI
- WHO
- WOC

Minnesota (all in Duluth - East of the Mississippi on the map)
- WWJC
- WEBC
- KDAL (They can't decide either)

Illinois
- KFNS
- KSGM

Kansas
- WIBW

Nebraska
- WJAG

Oklahoma
- WWLS
- WKY
- WBBZ

Pennsylvania
- KDKA (noted)
- KYW
- KQV

South Dakota
- WNAX

....and a couple of *strange* ones in North Carolina
- DWZOO
- DWBTB
X is Mexico.

Yes, the 'X' should have been 'N'. The US also uses 'A' for the Army
and Air Force.
C is Canada.
I ass-u-me'd the same system held for hams.

It is, just a mistook (and incomplete)

Santiago, Chile. Or perhaps Perth, Australia.

Wouldn't Ecuador be a little closer than Chile?

Thanks,
