Good shock sensor for a safe ??

Hi ,

I want to install a safe in a convenience store that is tired of
getting held up (8 times in 13 months). I am going to put in a
dedicated panel (P832) with a shock sensor and 24 hr contact with
keyswitch. This system will be totally separate from the main alarm
system with it's own monitoring, panel and phoneline. Can somebody
recommend a good shock sensor that will detect a tool attack but is
adjustable enough to take a "normal" hit as in being accidentally
bumped without falsing ? The safe will be bolted with 7 inch lags into
the floor joists of the store and has a combination key/spindle 8 bolt
door. I was thinking of using an FG-1525 GB as the safe has full glass
inserts in two walls that would break with a direct attack.

TIA

Sharmon

PS this is what the customer wants not what I suggested .

Hi Sharmon,

The customer in this case is wrong. Go with your experience and convince
him to use a vault sensor.

Instead of a glass break detector, use a vault sensor designed for the
purpose. Sentrol makes a DV1221 Structural Vibration Sensor. Installed
correctly they're reliable and effective. IOW, they don't false much and
they will detect a real attempt.

Manufacturer's website:
http://207.173.33.114/products/PRD_Det_about.asp?PID=DV1200&ListID=16

One small caveat: If this is to be a louvered drop safe (the type where a
clerk can drop cash in excess of a certain amount through an opening), be
careful that the operation of the louver won't set it off. Some of these
units have a movable steel baffle or a swivel drawer into which the clerk
places a deposit. The louver or door is then rotated to drop the envelop
while preventing use of a shim to retreive the contents. The movable piece
is usually heavy steel and will clank a bit when operated. That can set off
a vault sensor or a glass break in close proximity.

I've seen one type of drop safe that employed two fixed baffles to allow
money to drop while blocking retrieval. This type has no moving parts other
than the locked door and is suitable for a vault alarm.

Regards,
Robert

Sharmon, Paradox make a specific sensor designed for safes and the
application you are describing. You might want to check it out with

Did you suggest the S&W Model 357?

I don't believe Smith and Wesson makes a "Model 357".

Thanks Bob , I'll go over on Monday. This poor woman has been held up
with a gun 5 times , 2 times with a knife and once by a woman with an
"Aids needle". I've already installed bars on the front door with a
remote strike and and a second camera outside the store. In one
instance she was held for 23 minutes while the scumbag worked on the
dropsafe and seeing that the building has underground phonelines and I
have 5 P832s that are doing nothing I suggested that the safe be wired
up with a separate dedicated system as she now has a somewhat hardened
safe.

Cripes ! Hard to believe that sort of thing is happening in Ottawa...

I have a corner confectionary store in Vanier that has been robbed about
four times now, albeit only with physical threats - no weapon. You
definately have to do some very out of the ordinary things to give these
poor folks adequate protection (and even then it doesn't seem to help..)

If you have the internet, go up to www.paradox.ca and you should also see
the device for safes

I could have swore the Canadian government took away all those guns to make
the public safer? :)

They only took a little over a billion dollars of Canadian taxdollars money
to set up the program....not quite finished yet. Unfortunately, the crack
dealers, Jamaican gangs and Hell's Angels have yet to register their
firearms. Meanwhile if you are a Legion branch that owns a decorative
vintage Howitzer in the front of the town hall then you'd best get it
registered, lest someone steal it and use it in a hold-up.

Well, we're all hoping our new Prime Minister will see the light as part of
his major cost cutting moves. He's busy decimating all the feel good and
other idiotic programs our last Prime Minister set up during his "reign".
We're hoping the long gun registry will also go, but the anti-gun extremists
are already busy in the background lobbying to make sure nothing is cut...

I'm still trying to get all the foolishness done for my firearms, but it's
not going so well (two years after the date...). One day soon, I expect to
have them knocking on my door saying "hand 'em over".....

As I remember Bob, this safe sensor is some form of 24 device that goes
under that safe and detects only certain types of shocks that would indicate
a direct attack on the unit. Since I can't remember much about it (and don't
intend to research it...hey...I'm on holidays !!...), I don't know how this
is any better than a conventional 24 hour loop. But knowing Paradox, it must
be a good unit that has some real legitimacy for it's stated
purpose...(geez..does this sound like a "plug" for Paradox...:)))

Well if you register them, it's only a matter of time.

Problem is, they were already registered under the old legislation. Now you
are required to do so AGAIN under the new legislation, but not without going
through all sorts of hoops first. So they know I have them....

But if they didn't.......:))))))

Because the phonelines are protected and this way I can make each
panel a protected loop of the other on opposite sides of the building.
This makes it really hard to defeat with a hammer.

It'd be a real shame if they were all stolen. ;-)
