The MPAA is going to have a stroke trying to have this taken off every
website/usenet group and search engine cache.

Let me know when they print the T-shirts.

I think the MPAA need to learn about King Canute and recognise that they
have as much chance of keeping this one quiet as they have of holding back
the tide.

How long before some of the DVD-cracking gurus get the code tatooed on their
bodies - the ultimate in permanence.

This reminds me of the story (maybe an urban myth) about an illegal
immigrant to the USA who got the algorithm for some encryption technology
tatooed on his body. Because it was illegal to export the algorithm outside
the USA (and certainly to his native country), they couldn't deport him
without contravening that law.

Can I ask what I would use this code for? - I take it it's for copying
HD DVD but where does the code come into it?

Seeing as its cross posted I thope someone will take the time to
explain.

The code would need to be used by a program to decrypt dvd information. You
wouldn't be able to "do" anything with it yourself, but it enables the
writers of software that copies/decrypts DVDs to do the same with HD DVDs.

This could actually benefit that format.
If I was going to go HD then it would be my first choice simply because of this.

It could very well be a deliberate leak/publicity stunt.

I was wondering why it had been crossposted to umtm or, indeed, to
rec.sport.soccer, at all.

Because it's important to propagate it for the public record in order to
resist the DMCA takedown notices being issued faster than buttered lard down
a ski slope by the MPAA.

Really? How do they propose getting their hands on thousands of HD-DVD
players to apply a firmawre patch?

The only people who will get buggered are the people who watch HD-DVDs
on Windows and their collection becomes worthless after the latest
'patch Tuesday'.
