Dear Michael:

You will have some tiny amount radiated out as very long wavelength
radio waves, some energy dissipated making a weak magnetic field.

No, it draws XYZ / COP (COP = coefficient of perfomance) joules out of
the wall, and delivers XYZ joules to the room in the same period of
time as your "electric heater".

Because it produces *colder air* outside, moving that heat inside.

David A. Smith

Except that outdoor AIR heat exchangers freeze up, forcing a serious
operating limitation... as I pointed out previously, my "heat pump"
has a sump heater to prevent this :-(

If only! I could more or less deal with imaginary lunatics, but the
kind that claim to have reported me to the FBI are less imaginary than
I'd like. Jim Thompson posted this gem here a while back.

SLoman, you can't tell reality from a crappy television show.
"Nope. Since you have exhibited extreme anti-American behavior here
in
this newsgroup I simply pointed out said behavior to ICE and a few of
my friends within the FBI. "

That a right wing-nut case for you.

You are a paranoid fool.

It happens when cooling rooms too. We have a room air conditioner
that "supercools" a room where our computer equipment resides. It is
not unusual for the indoor-side (cold-side) heat exchanger to ice up,
and stop allowing air to pass. So the compressor just keeps driving
the coil colder still...

Refrigerators have the same problem, but they automatically do a
"defrost cycle" to eliminate the ice buildup.

No big surprise, no great loss in efficiency, just another lesson by
Nature for us to learn just Who is boss. ;>)

Naaaah! GOOD units have an "A-coil" temperature sensor that prevents
freeze-up.

Out 2T through-the-wall unit would do that too, then blow the
breaker. I think it was low on freon though. It was too expensive
to have it fixed and it worked fine if the fan was left on.

Yep.

Low freon does cause freeze-ups, unless there is some control of
A-coil temperature. Thinking back I think it actually is some kind of
pressure sensor rather than a temperature sensor.

My two 5-ton units (Trane) have all kinds of protection systems, even
short-cycling is prevented (in case of a power blip).

Of course not, I was just having fun with the "Al Gore School of
Consensus Science" ;-)

Maybe it's fun for you, but I get very worried when I see government
policy made by people who got their science education from "Plan
Nine from Outer Space."

Thanks,
Rich

They've had that for years. Even the AC above (20YO) had short-
cycle prevention. The fan would come on, but the compressor had to
be off for at least five minutes.

I think what has the right wing-nuts so upset about Gore are his efforts
to turn the internet into a public right-of-way (analogous to the
Interstate Highway system) and deprive private enterprise from
monopolizing it as a means to distribute advertising and product.

But it's not. All the backbone providers, all the portals, all the
ISP's, are for-profit corporations. And most of the free stuff is paid
for by advertising.

The internet is not a public utility. If you admire public utilities,
go stand in line at your local DMV.

Not really. I know Jim Thompson is out to get me, but since he really
is a paranoid fool, I can't imagine that anyone will take him
seriously, any more than I can - though he is a useful example of how
right-wing non-thinking can lead someone into making a fool of
themselves. You should think about that.

Bill Sloman, Nijmegen

Keith, please don't insult the paranoids! ;-)

For once I have to agree with you. I don't really have what it takes
to qualify as paranoid. I don't see Jim Thompson and his frends in the
FBI as a threat - Jim is obviously a joke, and his friends in the FBI
will have laughed themselves sick.

Real paranoia takes itself much more seriously.
