The battery will be backing up some RAM which may just be a clock but could equally be some calibration software (again in RAM).
If the unit is programmable (front panel buttons?) have you checked any parameters such as the 'set temperature' etc?
Battery is usually 3.6V. If all units are showing a low battery then it's likely that this is the cause of the fault.
