Help identifying resistor

Hello,

This is my first post, so thanks for taking the time to read it over. I appreciate the help.

I have been trying to find a replacement for the following resistor, but have been receiving some conflicting advice.

This looks like a 0.10ohm +/-5% 1/4W metal carbon resistor.

I read somewhere that the R stands for a decimal place and that an R1 would be 0.1 ohm.

The closest someone had to offer as a replacement was an R1 5W resistor which was too large for the space on the board.

Could you please let me know what type of resistor this is and where I may purchase 2-10 of them?

I am looking to replace these on my LG power supply board.

Have you tried Digikey?
Is the one shown defective? looks OK?

To determine if the R is ok requires doing a Kelvin connection measurement.

An excellent reference handbook for these types of measurements :

What are the length and diameter of the resistor body? This will help us guess at its power rating.

Measure the max diameter at the end caps.

Also, what is the hole spacing on the pc board?

Sorry for the delay responding.

The length is about 3/8” and the diameter is about 1/8”

The hole spacing is 11/16”

Hoping this helps.

Have you tried Digikey?
Is the one shown defective? looks OK?
I have but they have a disclaimer that the pictures may not be the actual product, so hard to get anything without knowing for sure the type of resistor.

The one I took of photo of looks fine, but the other one has the coating peeled off and white residue coming out of one end.

Is physical space limited? Will the repair be visible? If you fit the part does it fix the fault?

How do you mean “will the repair be visible”? Visible on what sense?

Does the fit of the part matter, or do the specs of the part matter? If they have a 5W resistor and a 1/4W is required, will the 5W not cause issues by not resisting 1/4W?

A 5W is perfectly ok in place of say, a .25W. It’s still the same value.
I believe the question about space and being visible means, will a larger resistor fit albeit standing up or even laying at at angle?.

Thanks for the clarification. Maybe I should have started off by saying I’m very new to this in general.

Okay, so anything over the W is fine. What part decided the resistance? Can I use any resistor that fits with a +/- 5%? Does the coating matter?

And lastly, I’m still not sure what the resistor I posted actually is. Is it a 0.1 ohm resistor?

I have some smaller 100ohm resistors cause I was told that 0.1 is called 100ohm.

It would be nice to know what resistor I have to replace so I can order it and solder it on.

The 5 ring charts for resistors is making it difficult for me to identify.

Really appreciate the help.

Also, for spacing. Please see previous reply with images of the front and back of board including measurements for spacing.

I’d say there is room to use a different resistor. Just not sure which one to actually purchase.

If you can get one in the range, I would go with wire-wound.

Notice the multiplier colours.

That’s either a 1 Ohm, 10.8 Ohm or 48 Ohm.
Brown, Black, grey/Silver?, yellow/gold?, Brown.
Can you confirm the colours you have?. It’s probably a 1 Ohm but I am not sure. Also looks wire wound.

A 0.1 ohms resistor of 2 watts (looks like to me....) would work - as would other wattages OVER that.

Values of sub-1 ohm are usually wirewound in construction - ceramic coated for high heat applications.

Basically anything that 'fits'. All said, what makes you think that resistor is dud? And if it is, what do you think caused it to be dud?

Thank you. This is how I read it as well, but wasn’t sure.

I’ll be honest, neither of the two I pulled were duds. I took them out as a test, but noticed the ceramic coating had started to break off the other one, so decided to just swap them out for extra practice. I have since lost one of the two and need to replace it/them, but wasn’t sure what they were to even replace.

I will order a 0.1Ohm wire wound ceramic coated 2+ W resistor with +/- 5%
